A runner that belongs to the staircase
Begin with the amount of timber you would like to leave visible. Border width, pattern and the shape of the treads then need to work together. If the stairs will be painted or repaired, plan that work before fitting the runner. An unusual landing may call for a tailored junction or a coordinating fitted carpet rather than simply extending the same line across it.
