Start with the way your rooms connect

Luxury vinyl tile offers a practical approach to busy interiors, with designs that bring the visual warmth of timber or the quieter character of stone to a room. It is worth considering in kitchens, hallways and family living spaces where a surface that is straightforward to clean matters. At Bonsai Flooring, we look at how those rooms connect. A continuous floor can make an open-plan layout feel coherent, while a carefully chosen threshold can mark the transition to a snug or carpeted bedroom.

Herringbone, plank or tile

Herringbone gives a floor a strong sense of direction. The size of the pieces, the position of the central line and the relationship to doorways all influence the final effect. A straight plank layout can feel calmer in a room already rich in architectural detail; stone-effect tiles offer a different rhythm again. We discuss these options against your room dimensions, furniture and lighting. Patterned layouts need allowance for cuts and setting out, so the amount ordered and the fitting work cannot be inferred from the visible floor area alone.

Look closely at the finish

The right colour is more than a pale or dark wood effect. Grain contrast, surface texture and the scale of the printed design all affect the feel of the completed room. Compare samples against kitchen fronts and worktops, and look at them from standing height as well as close up. Ask about larger samples where available. We use the current showroom selection to narrow the options and confirm the chosen collection and colour in writing; we do not list brand partnerships or stock promises that have not been verified.

Understand the installation format

LVT is available in different constructions and fitting formats, and they do not share a single preparation method. A gluedown product is bonded to a prepared base; other systems may use an interlocking format with their own edge and expansion requirements. The right approach depends on the product, the subfloor and the room. A floor described as water-resistant does not by itself waterproof a building or solve damp beneath it. Bathrooms, strong sunlight and heating systems all require a check of the actual product instructions before selection.

Preparation is part of the finished floor

Small defects beneath a resilient floor can affect its appearance, so preparation deserves time in the quotation and programme. We assess the existing surface, its stability, flatness and moisture condition. The specification may call for a suitable smoothing system, an appropriate overlay or moisture management, depending on what is found. New screeds cannot be assumed ready simply because they look dry. Where different bases meet, as in an extension joining an older room, that junction needs to be considered before laying a continuous finish.

From home measure to installation

The free measure is an opportunity to check doors, floor heights, thresholds and awkward corners as well as dimensions. We discuss laying direction, borders where appropriate, furniture movement and the sequence of other trades. For herringbone, the starting line is particularly important: a pattern should look intentional when seen through the main entrance to the room. Professional installation follows the selected system’s requirements, including adhesives where specified and any waiting time before normal use. We explain the agreed scope and any preparation allowances in a clear quotation.

Practical does not mean indestructible

LVT is a useful choice for family life, but sharp grit, dragging furniture and unsuitable cleaning products can damage its surface. Use appropriate protective pads, lift heavy items and keep entrance matting clean. Sweep or vacuum with a suitable hard-floor attachment, then clean using the flooring manufacturer’s recommended method. Avoid steam cleaning unless the specific product instructions explicitly permit it. Spills should still be removed promptly. If a piece becomes damaged, repair options depend on the fitting system, the surrounding floor and the availability of matching material.

Heating and changing light

If you are planning underfloor heating, bring the system information to your consultation. Compatibility needs to be confirmed for the selected LVT, installation format and adhesive, with attention to operating limits and the commissioning sequence. Large glazed areas are another reason to discuss the room carefully, because solar gain can affect the conditions at floor level. We help you ask the right questions before ordering. For a natural timber surface instead, compare engineered wood; for quieter upstairs rooms, consider carpet as part of the same scheme.

A little more clarity

Your questions, considered

Can LVT be fitted over an existing floor?

Sometimes, but the existing finish and the base beneath it need assessment. A sound-looking surface does not establish moisture condition or suitability for the chosen installation system.

Is herringbone suitable for a small room?

It can be. Piece size, layout and the view through doorways matter more than a simple rule about room size. Compare samples and a proposed layout before deciding.

Is LVT maintenance-free?

No. It needs routine cleaning, protection from grit and furniture damage, and care products appropriate to its surface.
