Comfort with a purpose
Carpet changes both the feeling and the sound of a room. In bedrooms and dressing rooms, softness underfoot can be the priority; in living rooms, the balance may shift towards resilience and a texture that sits comfortably alongside your furniture. Stairs and landings need a carpet suitable for repeated foot traffic. At our independent carpet shop in Hungerford, we begin with these everyday details, then bring together a manageable selection of colours and constructions. A beautiful sample only becomes a good choice when it works in your home.
Wool, twist and a softer finish
Our existing carpet selection includes wool blends, practical twist piles and deeper saxony styles. A twist pile gives a more textured surface, while a saxony can have a softer, more luxurious appearance. Pile direction affects the way light falls across carpet: footprints and vacuum marks may be more noticeable on some finishes. Loop constructions offer another kind of texture, but households with pets should discuss the possibility of claws catching loops. We explain the differences using the samples available, without treating one fibre or construction as the answer to every room.
Colour belongs in the room
Bring a paint reference, curtain fabric or photograph of the space to your consultation. We can compare warm and cool neutrals, more expressive colours and the scale of texture against the rest of your scheme. View a sample in daylight and under the lighting you use in the evening before making a final choice. Full-size samples are available where possible; ask what can be arranged for your shortlist. A small swatch is useful for comparison, but it cannot show every variation across a fully fitted floor.
Measuring beyond the floor area
Our free home measure looks at the shape of the room, doorway positions, alcoves and changes of level. Carpet roll width, pile direction and the position of any joins all affect the quantity required. This is why multiplying two room dimensions is not a reliable final order. Tell us which rooms will be completed together and whether furniture needs to be moved. We explain the proposed layout and provide a clear quotation covering the agreed work, so that preparation and finishing details are considered before fitting begins.
A good foundation for softness
Underlay should be matched to the carpet, the room and the intended use. A very soft underlay is not automatically right for stairs or every carpet construction. Existing boards should be secure, and the base needs to be assessed for unevenness or moisture before the new materials go down. Door clearance and transitions to adjacent hard floors also deserve attention. Where underfloor heating is present, the combined carpet and underlay specification must be checked against the heating system and product instructions, rather than relying on the carpet alone.
Fitting that considers the whole home
Before installation, we agree access, room readiness and the order of work with you. Professional fitting includes appropriate securing and tensioning for the chosen carpet, careful cutting around room edges and suitable finishes at thresholds. Stairs require their own assessment, including the nosing profile and any turns. If you would prefer to reveal the edges of a timber staircase, explore our bespoke stair runners. For a whole-home scheme, we can discuss carpet upstairs alongside LVT or engineered wood in the living spaces below.
Living with your carpet
Regular vacuuming helps remove grit before it works into the pile. Use the vacuum setting and attachments recommended for the particular construction; a rotating brush is not suitable for every loop or natural-fibre carpet. Blot spills promptly with a clean absorbent cloth rather than rubbing them further into the fibres, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Do not assume a household cleaning product is safe for wool. Furniture cups can help distribute pressure, although some indentation is a normal consequence of furniture resting on a soft floor.
A considered choice, with clear limits
Carpet is inviting in dry living spaces, but it is not the natural starting point for a wet bathroom or an area regularly exposed to muddy footwear. An entrance mat and a practical floor near external doors can help protect the softer rooms beyond. During your visit, ask us to show the current collection names and the written care information for any product you are considering. Availability changes, so we confirm the exact carpet, colour and suitability in your quotation rather than promise an unverified range online.
Your questions, considered
Can you carpet one room?
Yes. Tell us which room you are planning and we can arrange advice and a free measure, whether it is a single bedroom or a wider renovation.
Is all carpet suitable for stairs?
No. Stair suitability depends on the particular construction and manufacturer’s guidance. We check the carpet, underlay and fitting approach together.
Can carpet work with underfloor heating?
Some combinations can. The carpet and underlay must be checked as a combined system against the heating and flooring specifications.
